Sativa Marijuana
Knowing which kind of marijuana to get is the first issue that confronts every medical marijuana patient. One visit to a pharmacy alone will give him/her such a wide selection of strains to choose from. This whole dilemma can be overwhelming – what with all the different names and prices of each type.
But things can in fact be simplified since there are only 2 major types of marijuana: Sativa and Indica. Within these two types are many specialized and exotic strains and blends. It is highly similar to tobacco which comes in regular, menthol and light types which are available in several strains and blends like Winston, Marlboro, Camel, etc.
The Sativa strains are considered as stimulants – because of this, they’re great for stimulating appetite, relieving depression, migraines, pains and nausea. Currently, there is consensus as to what brand names are effective for particular symptoms. The sativa high is said to be mental in nature. But if you prefer a more specific piece of advice, inquire from your pharmacist.
Colombia, Mexico, Thailand as well as Southeast Asia are said to be where Sativa originated. Flavors vary from earthy to sweet and fruity. Sativa plants mature longer and have a longer flowering cycle compared to Indica plants. In addition, they can be less full but taller compared to the other kind. These facts, namely longer growing period and lower yield, result to many pharmacies having low stocks of Sativa. All these being said, it’s then a good idea for patients to consider growing their own.
GROWERS CHOICE: SOUR DIESEL
We highly recommend Sour Diesel for a couple of reasons: (1) for its effective medicinal effect and (2) because it’s easier to grow compared to the other blends of Sativa. Also, note that throughout its flowering, drying and curing stage, Sour Diesel has extreme pungency. Even the buds are not immune to this pungent smell. The leaves around the buds are highly sticky.
Some popular Sativa “brand names” are Swiss Miss, Big Fatty, Blue Heaven, Durban Poison, Hawaiian Sativa, Lamb’s Bread, Train Wreck and White Widow.
To further show the differences among strains and blends, refer to the following testimonials from the patients themselves:
As a medical marijuana patient, I medicate (vaporize) with the Indica strains. I primarily use the old school UBC Chemo, an 80/20 Indica/Sativa, and it’s certainly effective in taking away the horrible muscle cramps brought about by MS.
I have a pal who has been into bouts of depression for years and was taking the strains recommended by the pharmacies to no avail. The pills only deteriorated his health further. Now, he makes use of sativa to make canna-butter. He includes that in his food; this is what he’s using in lieu of the antidepressants. I have also acknowledged that many people claimed miraculous health benefits from the use of cannabis. I’ve also read that kids with autism also benefit greatly from the use of medical marijuana.
It seemed the Indicas were better for treating pain with a sedative property, and the Sativa was better for use when I didn’t want to get tired. Personal experience shows me that Indicas help me sleep at night while Sativas are great for day use – when I need to feel energized. Both help with my pain. They’re also very useful at eradicating the swelling.
